NDIS Knowledge Hub

Your funding, decoded.

Every NDIS plan splits into up to three budgets, and each behaves differently. Know which is which and you will never leave support unused.

The three budgets

Core, Capacity Building, Capital.

Same plan, three very different sets of rules. Here is what each pays for and how flexible it really is.

Core

Core Supports

Everyday assistance: personal care, community access, consumables and transport.

Most flexible. Funds can usually move between Core categories as your week demands.

  • Support workers at home and out in the community
  • Continence and low-cost daily consumables
  • Transport to activities, work or study
CB

Capacity Building

Supports that build skills and independence over time, not just for today.

Fixed to each category. Funding cannot move between Capacity Building categories.

  • Support coordination and psychosocial recovery coaching
  • Therapies: OT, physio, psychology, speech
  • Employment support and daily living skills
Cap

Capital

Higher-cost, one-off items that need quotes or approval before purchase.

Least flexible. Tied to the specific item or modification in your plan.

  • Assistive technology and equipment
  • Home and vehicle modifications
  • Specialist Disability Accommodation funding
Use it well

Four habits that protect your plan.

  1. 01

Track spending monthly, not at review time. Small drifts become big shortfalls.

  2. 02

Unspent funding does not roll over, and consistent underspend can shrink your next plan.

  3. 03

Keep receipts and notes on how supports link to your plan goals.

  4. 04

Ask providers for service agreements that show rates against the NDIS price guide.
